Moving Magnet Cartridges

Moving magnet cartridges are the most common type of phono cartridge and are fitted to many turntables, from entry-level models through to more advanced hi-fi designs. They generate the signal from the movement of the stylus in the record groove and are designed to work with the moving magnet phono input found on most amplifiers and phono preamplifiers.

Compared with moving coil cartridges, moving magnet designs are generally easier to set up, more affordable and often allow the stylus to be replaced separately when it wears out. They are available in a wide range of performance levels, from simple cartridges for everyday listening through to more refined models designed to extract greater detail and tracking ability from your records.

When choosing a moving magnet cartridge, it is worth considering the type of turntable and tonearm you are using, as well as the sound you are looking for. Some cartridges are designed to sound warm and smooth, while others focus on detail, precision and stereo imaging.
