The output stage uses Marantz’s discrete current feedback amplifier topology, chosen for its wide bandwidth and fast transient response. This approach is paired with Marantz’s proprietary HDAM (Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module) circuitry, which replaces conventional op-amps in critical signal paths to improve speed, noise performance, and overall signal integrity.

The Model 50 includes a comprehensive selection of analogue and digital inputs. Analogue connectivity includes multiple line-level inputs as well as a dedicated moving magnet phono input, allowing direct connection of a turntable without the need for an external phono stage. Digital inputs include optical and coaxial connections, along with a USB-A input for playback from compatible storage devices. The internal DAC supports high-resolution PCM audio up to 192 kHz / 24-bit, making the amplifier suitable for use with modern digital sources such as CD transports, televisions, and music streamers.

Tone controls for bass and treble are provided, along with balance adjustment, allowing users to tailor playback to room acoustics or personal preference. A dedicated headphone output with its own amplifier circuit is included for private listening. The amplifier also features a Source Direct mode, bypassing unnecessary circuitry to provide a shorter, cleaner signal path when tone control adjustment is not required.

Physically, the Model 50 is built on a rigid metal chassis designed to reduce vibration and electrical interference. Attention is paid to internal layout, grounding, and component selection to maintain consistent performance over time. The Bowers & Wilkins 704 S3 is a slim floorstanding loudspeaker within the 700 Series S3 range, designed to deliver balanced, full-range performance in high-quality stereo systems while maintaining a more space-efficient cabinet footprint suited to medium-sized listening rooms.

High-frequency reproduction is handled by a Carbon Dome tweeter developed specifically for the 700 Series. The tweeter is housed in a solid aluminium enclosure that is mechanically decoupled from the main cabinet. This isolation helps reduce the transfer of cabinet vibration to the tweeter, improving clarity and maintaining consistent performance across a wide range of listening levels.

The midrange driver employs Bowers & Wilkins’ Continuum cone technology, originally developed for the company’s higher-end loudspeaker designs. The Continuum cone is engineered to minimise abrupt breakup behaviour common to traditional cone materials, resulting in a smoother, more controlled midrange response. This contributes to improved vocal intelligibility and more accurate reproduction of instruments within the critical mid-frequency band.

Low-frequency performance is delivered by twin Aerofoil Profile bass drivers. These drivers use a variable-thickness cone construction that provides rigidity where required while reducing mass in other areas, allowing for more controlled cone movement and improved efficiency. In the 704 S3, this configuration delivers articulate, well-controlled bass with sufficient extension for most stereo listening without overwhelming smaller to medium-sized rooms.

The cabinet design incorporates a refined baffle layout and internal bracing to minimise unwanted resonance and cabinet coloration. Rear-mounted Flowport™ bass reflex technology is used to manage airflow from the enclosure, reducing turbulence and audible port noise during dynamic passages. The Flowport surface dimples are designed to improve airflow efficiency, particularly at higher playback levels.
