EARMEN Sparrow DAC Headphone Amplifier

The EarMen Sparrow is a compact USB DAC, preamplifier and headphone amplifier designed for use with smartphones, tablets and computers. Built around the ESS ES9281PRO DAC, it supports high-resolution digital audio playback while providing both 3.5mm single-ended and 2.5mm balanced headphone outputs in a lightweight portable enclosure.

ESS Sabre DAC

At the heart of the Sparrow is the ESS ES9281PRO DAC, integrating digital-to-analogue conversion and USB audio processing within a compact, low-power design.

The Sparrow supports PCM playback up to 384kHz, DXD at 352.8kHz and 384kHz, and DSD64 and DSD128 via DoP (DSD over PCM).

Balanced and Single-Ended Headphone Outputs

The Sparrow provides both a conventional 3.5mm single-ended headphone output and a 2.5mm balanced output, allowing it to accommodate a wide range of headphones and earphones.

The balanced output provides increased output capability for compatible headphones, while the 3.5mm connection supports standard headphone cables and portable listening setups.

MQA Renderer

The Sparrow incorporates MQA Renderer functionality through the ES9281PRO DAC. When connected to software capable of performing the initial MQA Core decode, the Sparrow can perform the final rendering stage of an MQA stream.

MQA rendering is separate from full MQA decoding, and requires a compatible playback application or source to provide the decoded MQA Core signal.

Low-Noise Circuit Design

EarMen designed the Sparrow around a four-layer PCB with carefully selected components and a low-noise power supply arrangement. The compact circuit layout is intended to minimise electrical noise and interference while maintaining stable performance from USB-powered devices.

Designed and Built in Europe

The Sparrow was developed in cooperation with Auris Audio and is designed and manufactured in Europe. Its aluminium enclosure is CNC machined to provide a rigid, lightweight housing while helping shield the internal audio circuitry from external interference.

Compact Portable Design

Measuring just 42mm × 22mm × 8mm and weighing approximately 12g, the Sparrow is small enough to remain attached to a smartphone or portable source without adding significant bulk.

Its rounded aluminium enclosure is designed to minimise snagging when used as part of a portable headphone setup.

USB Connectivity

The Sparrow connects through USB-C and is compatible with supported Windows, macOS, Android and iOS devices. Its USB audio interface is designed for straightforward connection without requiring additional configuration for compatible devices.
