It is commonly accepted that small speakers can seriously compromise quality of sound, be it in terms of distortion, achievable volume or the depth of low frequency bass. While subwoofer/satellite speaker packs are often popular for home theatre applications, compact aesthetics typically do not go hand in hand with audiophile performance. Elac set out to redefine high performance from a compact standmount speaker, and have done precisely that.

A range of proprietory technologies allow the 310ce speakers to astound in such a way that the impression of a high-end floorstanding loudspeaker is given. The new ‘crystal membrane’ ce models benefit from the ’crinkled’ aluminium sandwich drivers, with improved rigidity, transients and dynamic/frequency range. The voice coil now mounts directly to the rear of this stiffer midrange/bass driver, and uses what Elac term XR (eXtended Range) for added sonic improvements.

Elac’s own ‘Jet’ tweeter, a concertinaed ribbon design already quite famous and used throughout Elac’s performance speaker range, exhibits pinpoint accuracy extending smoothly to 50kHz. All this is housed in a 6.5mmthick compression formed aluminium speaker box/chassis - a rigid and durable design that clearly puts performance above costs (shown also with100% German production & 10yr warranty).
